Rouven and Franzi visited me last week in Tallinn. I was so happy that they visit me and I can show them the city. We did a whole week of travelling and exploring of Tallinn, Helsinki and the surroundings. Since tourists can not travel for free in public transport we walked a lot and now I finally know how to find myself everywhere in Tallinn.
Tallinn
| Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Tallinn Old Town |
| Fishing in Estonia has not a lot of restrictions. Pensioners can fish completely free. |
| You can find a lot of flea markets in Estonia. They are selling everything from old tools up to antiques or some fruits like apples they collected in the woods. When you see these you feel spoor for the people, sometimes the value of all the products they try to sell for a day does not exceed 30€ |
| old engine room from a coal - steam ship that sailed around the world |
| Control room of an old submarine |
| Tallinn has a big number of bars. This one offers live music and a modern atmosphere |
| After the students flooded this bar they run out of glasses and gave us the beer in plastic cups or wine glasses |
| The centre of Tallinn consists completely of the old town. No cars, narrow streets and in the middle a big marketplace |
Helsinki
Helsinki is only 80km north of Tallinn, so by ferry it only takes 2,5h. In comparison to Tallinn, Helsinki is not as modern as Tallinn, but the architecture is more interesting and the city and the houses are bigger.
| Architecture in Helsinki is interesting and beautiful |
| I couldn't find out why there are these statues |
| On our way to the next destination |
| We visited Suomenlinna which is a sea fortress on an island. It reminded me of the home of the Hobbits in Lord of the Rings |
| This is Hietalahti market hall or also called old market hall. It looks nice with the wooden exterior, but its more like a tourist trap and prices are really high |
| Finland has the highest taxes on alcohol in the EU, for example you pay about 14€ only for taxes for a bottle with 700ml hard alcohol. Maybe that is the reason why we found a bottle of hard alcohol without alcohol, since its taxes are low. |
| Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland |
The national library was astonishing, in that atmosphere we were forced to read some old books
| After seeing this I know that finish people are build different. It was not warmer than 10°C |
